Toshiba Raises the Bar for Everyday Computing: the New Satellite L500 and Satellite L550

Toshiba Computer Systems Division (Neuss, Germany) have introduced two new widescreen laptops – the 15.6’’ Satellite L500 and the 17.3’’ Satellite L550 – both with an attractive and durable design at affordable prices. They are targeted at consumers that value quality, design and powerful capabilities for their everyday computing needs. Both devices will be available in the third quarter of 2009 throughout Europe, Middle East and Africa.

“Both the Satellite L500 and the Satellite L550 prove that quality, design and enhanced features can be accessible to anyone, no matter the budget,” says Thomas Teckentrup, General Manager, Toshiba Computer Systems Division Europe. “Whether the customer is a first-time buyer or someone who is just looking for a device that perfectly meets his or her everyday computing needs – they’ll find what they are looking for in one of these two new laptops."

Modern laptops for style- and value-conscious consumers

Designed to deliver a broad range of everyday computing features, the two newcomers offer a higher level of design than would usually be expected from such affordable devices. IMR (In-Mold Rolling) is used to deliver a design with rolling slim lines which continue inside on the Snow Silver surface around the silver-painted keyboard with numeric keypad. A multimedia bar with four buttons enhances the usability of these Satellite devices, as does the seamlessly integrated touch pad. The steel grey cover design provides a contemporary finish.

The right power for the job

The Satellite L500 has a 15.6’’ HD Toshiba TruBrite® display that offers a resolution of 1366 x 768 pixels and a luminance of 200 cd/m² while the Satellite L550 comes with a 17.3" HD TruBrite® display with power saving LED backlight technology, a resolution of 1,600 x 900 pixels and a luminance of 200 cd/m².

Connectivity of both devices is defined by an embedded WLAN interface including draft-n, Bluetooth® 2.1 + EDR (Enhanced Data Rate) and Fast Ethernet LAN (10/100 Mbps). Toshiba ConfigFree™ facilitates configuration of network access.

Though positioned in the price-conscious mainstream market segment, the Satellite L500 and the Satellite L550 are furnished with a broad variety of ports: an HDMI (High Definition Multimedia Interface) port, a 4-in-1 Bridge Media slot, two USB 2.0 ports and an additional eSATA/USB combo port. A DVD Super Multi (Dual Layer) drive and a VGA web camera supporting Toshiba’s Face Recognition software for easy log-in to password protected applications are also onboard. Toshiba’s Eco utility2 makes the reduction of power consumption easy. A hard disk drive with up to 500 GB complements the comprehensive feature list of these new Satellite laptops.

Toshiba offers a broad range of CPUs: The Satellite L500 comes with Intel Celeron, Pentium or Core 2 Duo processors, the Satellite L550 with Intel Pentium and Core 2 Duo processors. Both models can optionally be powered by AMD Athlon Dual Core, AMD Turion Dual Core or AMD Turion Ultra Dual Core processors.

As a responsible global corporate citizen, Toshiba ensures that all laptops are RoHS-compliant, effectively reducing the environmental impact by restricting the use of lead, mercury and certain other hazardous substances. Additionally, the Toshiba Eco utility and PC Health Monitor help to reduce power consumption. The new Toshiba Satellite L500 and L550 are ENERGY STAR® 5.0 ready (certification in process).
