Digitimes Research: Global top-5 notebook brands see over 20% shipment drop in April

Global top-5 notebook brands together suffered a more than 20% on-month shipment drop in April, while top-3 ODMs together had a drop of 14% due to most brand vendors having started to prepare for their next-generation models and some had excess inventory from March, according to Digitimes Research's latest figures.

Among top-tier brands, Hewlett-Packard (HP), Acer and Lenovo saw steeper shipment drops than others in the month, all surpassing 20%, while the rest also underperformed. This may cause global notebook shipments in the second quarter to see an on-year drop of more than 15%, but a sequential increase of 3%, the Digitimes Research figures show.

Taiwan notebook ODMs all suffered a double-digit percentage drop in April shipments.

As for Lenovo's plans to buy IBM's server business, although the two firms disagree on price, Digitimes Research believes Lenovo will continue its negotiations with IBM as there is no better choice available in the server market.
