LGD gears up development of 120Hz and full HD notebook panels

LG Display (LGD), which has beaten Samsung Electronics to become the worlds largest notebook panel supplier, is gearing up the development of notebook applications supporting 120Hz technology and full HD, according to market sources.

LGD, which has already launched CCFL- and LED-backlit 17.1-inch notebook panels, plans to start developing 120Hz applications for the size segment in the second quarter this year, the sources noted. LGD also plans to launch a full HD 17.3-inch notebook panel with a brightness of 220 nits, 72% of NTSC, and a weight of 555 gram in the first quarter of 2009, the scources added.

The Korean maker also has plans to launch HD and full HD 15.6-inch LED backlit notebook panels in 2009, and HD 14-inch products by the end of the first quarter this year. For 13.3-inch segment, LGD will launch 1,366x768 resolution LED backlit notebook panels in 2009, the sources noted.

With netbook demand likely to reach 25-30 million units this year, LGD will introduce several 10.1-inch netbook panels in 2009, the sources said, adding that besides the existing 1,024x576 resolution 10.1-inch panel, LGD will start to produce 1,366x768 resolution 10.1-inch panel in the first quarter this year. The sources noted that LGD also plans to start producing 11.6-inch netbook panels in April this year.

According to DisplaySearch, LGD was the top notebook panel supplier in 2008, followed by Samsung and AU Optronics (AUO).
