LG Claims Crown for World’s Thinnest LCD TV

LG has turned to edge lighting technology to create what it claimed is the world’s thinnest LCD TV panel.

LG’s edge-lit LCD is 5.9mm thick.

Only available in 42in and 47in screen sizes, the technology sees LEDs placed around the edges of an LCD screen – instead of behind it – to light up the display.

Each LG screen is 5.9mm thick, with the 42in screen weighing in at 6.1kg and the 47in model at 7.3kg. The firm’s also claimed that both weights are roughly 50 per cent lighter than those of similar sized LCDs lit by cold cathode elements.

It’s worth noting that edge-lit LCD tellies are by no means unique to LG. Samsung introduced a 32-55in range of edge-lit screens earlier this year.

Despite critics questioning edge lighting technology’s ability to spread light across the screen, LG claimed that both size sets reproduce a rich range of natural-looking colours. Each also feature 120Hz technology, an 8ms response time and full HD resolution.

Availability and pricing information hasn’t been released.
