LG Plans to Ship 7.5 Million LED TVs in 2010

LG Electronics aims to ship 7.5 million LED-backlit LCD TVs in 2010, up from 400,000 units in 2009, according to LG Taiwan.

LG’s LCD TV shipment goal for 2009 is 17 million units and is expected to increase to 25 million units in 2010, LG Taiwan said.

LG plans to launch 10 more LED-backlit models in 2010, including two direct-type backlighting series and two to three edge-type backlighting series, with screen sizes ranging from 32- to 60-inch, LG Taiwan noted.

LG Taiwan indicated that the price gap between LED- and CCFL-backlit TV narrows when screen size gets bigger. The price gap of its 42-inch CCFL- and LED-backlit models is about 40%, and drops to 20% for the 55-inch segment, LG Taiwan said, adding that the price gap between direct-type and edge-type backlighting models is about 5%.

LG has sold out its edge-type LED-backlit LCD TVs in Taiwan, and will start replenishing its inventory at the end of November, LG Taiwan noted.

To boost sales in Taiwan, LG Taiwan has reduced the prices for 42-inch and 47-inch models. The price of an entry-level 42-inch model has dropped to NT$35,900 (US$1,112.9) from NT$39,900.
