Lenovo to provide SMS laptop lockdown feature next year

Set on giving those who lost or were relieved of their laptops a little peace of mind, PC builder Lenovo has announced its intention to introduce a new security feature with its ThinkPad notebooks. Named Lenovo Constant Secure Remote Disable, the upcoming feature will enable users to render the lost/stolen laptop inoperable via a regular SMS.

Developed by Lenovo and Phoenix Technologies, the system will lock the notebook as soon as a SMS containing a simple command like lockdown now PC or PC shut off is received via the onboard mobile broadband service. Better yet, if the laptop is shut down while the SMS is sent out, the lockdown will take effect as soon as the portable PC is back online.

Lenovos Constant Secure Remote Disable solution is to be provided free of charge on select ThinkPad notebooks starting from Q1 2009.
