Green IT: Toshiba Portégé R600 takes first place in Greenpeace’s “Green Electronics Survey 2008”

Greenpeace awards Toshiba Portégé R600 as leading green notebook computer.

Greenpeace, an independent campaigning organization which uses nonviolent, creative confrontation to expose global environmental problems, has ranked the lightweight Toshiba Portégé R600 as its winner in the notebook category of its “Green Electronics Survey 2008”. According to the survey, which evaluates the greenest electronic products on the market, Toshiba appears ahead of other manufacturers, scoring the highest for avoiding hazardous chemicals in its notebook.

“We are very proud that Toshiba’s work to eliminate hazardous chemicals in our laptops have been credited by the independent and widely recognised environmental organisation Greenpeace,” says Thomas Teckentrup, general manager at Toshiba Computer Systems Division, Europe. “Toshiba has a long-standing sustainability policy and this award is great testament to what we have already achieved.”

The Portégé R600 is effectively reducing the environmental impact by restricting the use of lead, mercury and certain other hazardous substances. The ultra portable laptop is also ENERGY STAR® 4.0 compliant. An LED backlit display, the latest CPUs, and the use of a SSD (Solid State Drive) as a storage medium also results in low energy consumption and long battery life that further reduces its environmental impact.

Weighing just 779 grams and featuring a 128 GB solid state disk (SSD), the Portégé R600 is the ultimate laptop for style conscious professionals and consumers who want an ultra mobile computing solution without compromising on functionality. The Portégé R600 offers an extended battery life of up to eight hours.

The Portégé R600 comes with the latest Intel® Centrino® 2 CPU and a 12.1 inch LED backlit display, offering crystal clear visibility both indoors and outdoors. Further features include an embedded mobile broadband module offering data rates of up to 7.2 Mbps, WLAN, and Bluetooth 2.1 + EDR. The Portégé R600 also offers a spill resistant keyboard, shock protected design, fingerprint reader and remote management possibilities.

An optional 7mm integrated Optical SuperMulti DVD Drive (ODD) is available, enabling the user to read/write DVDs. The extra component only weighs 75 grams ensuring that even with the optional component, the R600 remains to be the lightest laptop on the market.
